Elephant

Title : Gratitude Elephant Fountain
Date : 2000
Dimensions : 36 cm (high, elephant only)
Materials : Stoneware clay, concrete building blocks and paint

For my Ceramics Degree Show in 2000, I wanted to make something spectacular, and so decided to make a fountain in the form of an elephant joyfully spraying water over its back. I hoped to have the elephant emerging from a blossoming flower but unfortunately, not all the components survived the necessary firings. Feeling completely physically and emotionally drained at the end of the nine-month project I gave up all thoughts of displaying the piece. Only the encouragement of my classmates allowed me to finish the piece on time using alternative materials. I am forever grateful to them for their dogged persistence and concern. This is my ‘Gratitude-Elephant Fountain’.
